Newcastle Marine Science Team – Visit July 2017

Hideaway Island Revisited

The story continues….

Another successful excursion by the University of Newcastle’s Marine Science team to the beautiful Hideaway Island in Vanuatu. Leaving winter behind, we arrived to warmth and sunshine with water temperatures hovering around 26 degrees, making it ideal for our water activities. As usual, we were welcomed by the friendly staff who did everything within their power to make our stay an enjoyable one.

On this visit,we continued our work on the coral reef regeneration program, gathering information for further study and “replanting” more pieces of broken coral onto the structures. Whilst not all there planted coral survives, it is exciting to see when there is new growth, either from previous gardening attempts or from natural processes, creating vital habitat and providing sources of food. Evenings were spent identifying many of the different species photographed in and around the structures during the day and planning the next day’s activities. In future visits we hope to continue with the coral regeneration program and to add to the fish identification and abundance surveys.  Fig 6.extraFig 1.Headband HumbugsIn particular, this December will see groups of Marine Science students from the University of Newcastle endeavor to design regeneration plans for the individual structures.

We would like to thank all the Hideaway staff for their continued support of this valuable program through monitoring and photographing the structures. We certainly look forward to working together for many years to come.

Qantas & Air Vanuatu Resume Port Vila Codeshare

Tuesday 16th May 2017

Chief executive officer of the national carrier Joseph Laloyer has announced Air Vanuatu and Qantas will resume their codeshare partnership on Port Vila flights from 15 June.

The news has been overwhelmingly welcomed by the tourism industry in Vanuatu as a necessary step forward to increasing destination marketing in Australia and beyond.

“Qantas has been a long term and important partner of Air Vanuatu’s,” Mr Laloyer said.

“From codeshare agreements to maintenance contracts, marketing to ground services, their partnership is our most valued and respected.”

Mr Laloyer said Qantas would resume selling flights from Sydney and Brisbane to Port Vila with connections from other Australian ports.

“They also intend to use new imagery to support holiday packages to the outer islands as well.”

Qantas has been codesharing on the Brisbane to Santo flights for sometime. Today’s announcement comes after the signing of contracts for Bauerfield airport upgrades.

Bryan Death, chairman of the Vanuatu Hotels and Resorts Association said the return of the codeshare should result in an immediate boost to arrival figures from Australia.

“This is the news we have been waiting on and it couldn’t have come at a better time with the current destination marketing campaign running in Australia,” he said.

Mr. Laloyer said Air Vanuatu was grateful for the patience and understanding of Qantas and the tourism industry in Vanuatu.

“We look forward to welcoming our first Qantas passengers back to Port Vila on 15 June,” he said.Air Vanuatu
